Living with the REAL Victor Meldrew

I can’t watch One Foot in the Grave anymore! This is because I’m actually living with the REAL Victor. Women of a certain age, married to men of a certain age may identify with this and although the programme is still as funny as it ever was, for me it’s a little too much like real life.

My Victor, like other grumpy old men (I can’t watch that programme anymore either!) has daily moans and rants about various people, their attitudes, rudeness etc. which usually include the usual “jobs worth” type people but also includes telesales people and politicians, i.e. the usual suspects! The men at the local dump seem to get the brunt of his anger and he’s been banned from a couple now, having to travel further and further to deposit our rubbish. Shop assistants get it in the neck too and there are several shops in our local town he’s been told not to come back too. I never go shopping with him as I prefer people not to know we are in anyway linked.

A few weeks ago Victor surpassed himself!

Having been ranting for sometime about the state the bins are left in after our weekly rubbish collection he decided he would e-mail the local council. The bins are often left in the middle of the path, preventing people getting past on the way to the local Doctors surgery or blocking our exit from the driveway and he’d become more and more annoyed about this as the weeks went by. The first time he complained directly to the bin men, with the result that the following week everyone else’s bins were emptied and ours remained full. As you can imagine this fuelled Victor’s anger even more.

The following week he took a picture of the bins (below) as evidence and being rather technically challenged he was very pleased with himself when he managed to transfer it to the computer.

He wrote the e-mail…

“Please find photo taken after collection this morning, not as bad as my original complaint but still an inconvenience to those trying to go down the path”…

He then attached the picture to demonstrate the offending article. Unfortunately this was the picture he sent instead…

About Oxfordshire Family Support Network

Oxfordshire Family Support Network (OxFSN) is a not-for-profit organisation run by and for family carers of people with learning disabilities – both children and adults. Oxfordshire Family Support Network (OXFSN) was set up in 2007 by family carers who wanted to use their experience to help others in the same situation, based on our belief that family carers are experts by their lived experience.
